Not to be nihilistic, but growing up in less restricted internet, I've stumbled across real world things far more horrifying than some needy director's theatrics.

There is still a part of me that is looking for something to shock me, and simply grossing me out Human Centipede style simply doesn't do it.

Martyrs came pretty close. Really what Martyrs does different from other torture porn films is presenting a story and purpose to its torture.

The world from the get-go feels gritty and genuine, and the characters feel like real people, and our leads make some choices that are pretty despicable but come from a genuine place.

When the more grotesque moments happen, they feel earned, and are handled in a manner evoking emotion that makes them far more effective than simply advertising how good your effects team is.

And yes, there is a moment in the second half the film that did shock me and even make me gag. What elevates the film above its genre though is that it gives its graphic violence purpose.

Without getting into spoilers, there are really two types of violence in this movie. One based on revenge, and one based on something else entirely.

In both cases, the violence depicted is not glorified nor is it shamed, it is simply shown. In both cases, it made me ask questions, and left me thinking about the movie days after I watched it.

Are these questions worth asking? Well, that's really up for debate. But I can't deny that the movie left an impact on me. Michael M Super Reviewer.

Apr 06, Unafraid of its own premise, Martyrs understands that if you want to make a polarising film you do it with full acknowledgement of your own disease.

Blends elements of child abuse, conspiracy, religion and kidnapping, Martyrs is incredibly dark and provides full-frontal exposure to a fictional world that doesn't release you from its clutches until its over.

Unfortunately, it's not good enough to really want to watch again, however it is far from artless and there is entertainment in the performances, vague whiff of lesbian melodrama and unflinching ending.

Definitely worth a watch and honestly, it really isn't as terrible as everyone makes out. Harry W Super Reviewer.

Aug 27, Usually I wait at least a day or two before writing a review to let the movie sink in and I can evaluate my opinion. It is brutal, ugly, and above all incredibly dispiriting.

I have seen my share of graphic, disturbing films, some of which I have recommended because they also feature qualities that make the experience worthwhile, but this sadistic hellride offers practically none.

She wound up in an orphanage and bonded with the one girl Anna who felt sorry for her. The biggest objection I have is that the second half revels in pain and suffering while barely moving the story forward, and fails miserably at providing any kind of resolution.

We do partially find out the implausible motives, but ultimately are left hanging along with a sick feeling of emptiness.

I suspect that they didn't really care about how they finished the movie as long as it gave them the excuse for the preceding hour and a half of extreme cruelty.

That makes their choice of an existential theme in an attempt to make the ordeal seem important even more shameless.

Why one star then? It is well made, minus the overused shaky cam and twitchy editing, and had enough story to hold interest during the first half.

But a well-made movie is not automatically a good movie, even if they got the response they were looking for.

A well-placed finger down the throat will also get a predictable reaction, yet the results far from meritorious.

Spare yourself the misery. The flashback torture scenes are pretty disturbing and sad to watch. This scene in the version is, as you might have guessed, shorter and less complete.

I mean that both figuratively and literally. In , you have a scene where Anna and Lucie are dirty, bloody, crying and comforting each other while surrounded by the dead bodies of the family.

What this comes down to again is that takes the time to build up the characters because when you really care about them the suspense is intensified immensely.

This whole section of the movie in felt like they took jot notes of all the lines and emotions they wanted to hit then filled in the gaps, while the lines and emotions in felt organic and well deserved.

In , Anna becomes a stand in for the audience wherein she never actually gets tortured. She listens to the exposition, and becomes the hero of the movie.

I was always hoping that Anna would make it out alive, but as time went on I started to feel hopeless right along with her and because of that her destruction was believable.

The last thing I want to compare is the actual explanation and meaning behind the tortures. In , it makes sense that they would take Anna and continue the torture with her because in their eyes Lucie and the previous girl were failures.

The girls were damaged people and were never going to become the martyrs they wanted. Now they needed a new subject and they had her. In , they flipped this idea around completely and Lucie was not a failure, she was actually seen as the next martyr.

There is no indication throughout the movie that there is something special about Lucie. The martyr is supposed to endure the pain and suffering, not escape it in their minds.

They have to really suffer to be able to see the afterlife. Overall, the version had a much better story with fleshed out and interesting characters.

The version was toted as more of a re-imagining rather than a straight up remake. I tried my best not to judge it too harshly in comparison but I think as a movie without even comparing it to the original it fell way short.

The characters were boring, uninteresting suburban girls.

The characters were boring, uninteresting suburban girls. The only part that made me cringe or feel anything was the skinning scene, but even that was watered down and pointless.

There was no build up to it, and the aftermath was very confusing. I feel like they threw it in because the original had it and audiences were expecting it.

As a horror fan, I would definitely check out the version, especially if you enjoy watching great characters. You are commenting using your WordPress.

Spare yourself the misery. Doctor S Super Reviewer. Jul 30, This extremely disturbing and almost unwatchable exercise in extreme sadism is always gripping, given how it follows unpredictable directions at every moment until it reaches a surprising final act that demands too much from the audience for being so nihilistic and profoundly sickening.

Along with her childhood friend, Anna, who also suffered abuse, she quickly descends, without hope, into madness and her own delusions.

Anna, left on her own begins to re-experience what Lucie did when she was only twelve years old. Written by kwedgwood hotmail.

Martyrs is one of the creepiest, violent, and disturbing movies I've seen in a good while. It may just be that it plays on several fears of mine, but I found Martyrs to be one of the hardest movies for me to sit through.

I think one of the most important aspects of the movie is it's abundance of violence and gore. Obviously it's not the only thing that makes the movie terrifying, but seeing such realistic depictions of cutting, beating, and mutilation really leave one hell of an impact.

The plot of Martyrs may not be the best, but the way it's told is enough that while watching the movie, it feels like a much better story than if someone were to sit down and explain it.

More than half the movie has no dialogue whatsoever for up to 10 minutes at a time, which allows the viewer to interpret most of it however they want.

I can't really comment on the acting as it's a foreign film, but I can say that the music and sound design are absolutely perfect even if some of the cinematography leaves something to be desired at times.

Fans of horror are probably going to enjoy Martyrs, but I would have a really hard time recommending it to anyone outside of that demographic.
